James Downend JAMES DOWNEND, President / Founder, began his career in landscaping at a local nursery. Jim took great interest in landscape design and soon began doing work outside of his nursery job during his free time. As his natural talent for design grew so did his desire to own his own business. In 1982 Jim purchased his first truck and began J. Downend Landscaping. Unlike many others in this industry he picked up a shovel instead of choosing to push a lawn mower. Jim spent the first five years in business installing landscapes until he brought his brother Joe on to begin his maintenance division.

Jim has always stressed several important facts to his supervisors, crew leaders, and laborers. Think of each landscape as if it were your own creation, treat the clients property as if it were your own, and take pride in the all the work you do. These philosophies can be seen with each project our crews complete. Our staff has taken these points to heart and at the completion of each project, they all take a moment to look back at the jobs they have completed and admire the end result, as witnessed on our walls in our office.

Jim to this day continues to create unique and functional landscape designs. You will not find him sitting behind a desk, but you may find him operating a piece of equipment or using a shovel to help get the results and desired affect he is looking for. He supervises and inspects his own crews on a daily basis, there is not a project going, that he does not see at some point during the construction process.

Joseph Shiber JOSEPH SHIBER, Vice President / Treasurer, started his career shortly after Jim Downend formed J. Downend Landscaping. Jim’s main focus was on landscape design and installation but saw the need for a maintenance division as he continued to grow his business. This is where J. Downend Landscaping became a family endeavor, he asked his brother Joe to help him create and manage his newly formed maintenance division. Since Joe had already been working in the field for Jim, while learning the business, it was a natural progression when Joe began to sell the companies services and supervise the daily operations of the maintenance division.

One of Joe’s first landscape maintenance clients, a new homeowners association in Newtown Square (Willistown Knoll) became our largest account and still continues to be one of our most well maintained properties to this day. When we brought this site into our portfolio, the site was still under construction and through dedication to proper techniques and education of the property owners; we have been successful in developing a healthy beautiful landscape that has been a source of pride for all that live in the community. Still a client today after 18 years the landscape in this development is highly regarded among our piers and among other homeowner associations.

Finally, continuing education in the landscape industry is one of Joe’s top priorities. Joe is currently preparing for the Certified Landscape Professional’s test, which will be held in June. This certification is offered by one of the largest industry associations (PLANET) and signifies both Joe’s and J. Downend Landscaping, Inc.’s continued commitment to excellence.

Tony Portale TONY PORTALE, Landscape Designer, joined J. Downend Landscaping Inc. in Dec. of 2002. Tony worked at a large landscape design / build company in Delaware County for four years before joining the J. Downend organization. Tony utilizes his extensive plant knowledge coupled with his years of experience which results in the creation of unique hardscaping and lighting designs. Tony uses his creative imagination to meet his client’s needs and expectations for any size project.

My philosophy to design:
I approach every design, no matter the size, as if I am creating it for my own home while at the same time trying to meet every requirement of the client. Secondly, I design my projects keeping the architecture of the house and the neighborhood in mind. However, I’m not afraid to incorporate unique design features in my by-design plan to give the client something fresh, exciting, and functional. I believe that it is imperative to provide a product that will increase the value of your real estate and a creation that will be enjoyed for years to come. Most importantly, I always strive to meet the expectations and needs of my client.
